The Peugeot 2008 is a subcompact crossover SUV. It’s a little bit smaller than some of its competitors (particularly those from German manufacturers), but it is primarily intended as a city car. The French automaker wants to give owners a vehicle that can accommodate their lifestyle and provide plenty of space for luggage on rarer annual getaways. You can think of the Peugeot 2008 as a bigger, more practical version of the 208. The 2008 improves on the 208 by offering more space, a better driving experience, and greater presence on the road.

Peugeot released the first iteration of the 2008 in 2013 and then a revised version of the vehicle in 2016. 

The second generation was released in June 2019 and offered a host of new technologies. 

Peugeot offers five internal combustion engine versions for second-gen 2008s, and one electric version. Options include: 

• 1.2 litre PureTech 100 petrol engine with either six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic
• 1.2 litre PureTech 130 petrol engine, with either, six-speed manual or six- or eight-speed automatic
• 1.2 litre PureTech 155 with eight-speed automatic
• 1.5 litre BlueHDi 100 diesel engine with six-speed manual
• 1.5 litre BlueHDi 130 eight-speed manual
• E-2008 with 100 kW electric motor and 50 kW battery

In terms of fuel economy, the Peugeot 2008 performs well, especially given the vehicle’s size.

Peugeot claims a city economy of 42.8 mpg and a highway economy of 58.8 mpg. Combined yields 51.1 mpg for the average driver.

CO2 emissions are low at just 105 g/km on the smallest petrol engine. The electric version of the vehicle produces no emissions at all.

In the UK, you can buy a Peugeot 2008 from £22,300. This figure competes with prices for its primary rivals – Nissan Juke, Hyundai Kona and Skoda Kamiq.

The Peugeot 2008 has Isofix child seat fittings on the rear seats. The GT version of the vehicle also features the fittings on the front seats as well. These connectors easily integrate into the seat base.

Peugeot 2008s towing capacity depends on the engine that you choose. All internal combustion versions of the vehicle (both petrol and diesel), have a towing capacity of 1,200 kg. The e-2008 doesn’t have a trailer rating right now.

Peugeot 2008 is able to tow most medium-sized caravans. 

You can think of the Peugeot 3008 as being the 2008's bigger (and more luxurious) brother.

The main difference between the 2008 and the 3008 is their size. The 2008 is a subcompact crossover SUV, while the 3008 is a full-size SUV. The 3008 is 147mm longer, 70 mm wider, and 74mm taller. It also has 59 mm more ground clearance for rolling over bumps and other objects on the road.

In terms of boot space, the 3008 is victorious. With the rear seats up, it has a capacity of 520 litres, which is 86 litres more than the 2008.

The answer to this question, of course, depends on the size of your suitcases. In general, you should be able to fit a whopping 4 large suitcases into the vehicle, or around six smaller ones. That’s enough for a two-week family holiday.

Both first and second generation Peugeot 2008s come with panoramic roofs. This means that the top of the car is just glass, allowing you to look up and see the sky.

Peugeot knows that the subcompact crossover market is crowded, so the glass roof is an attempt to differentiate itself from other automakers in the space.

The Peugeot 2008’s boot is 434 litres, and with the back seats down the boot space jumps to 1,467 Litres. The Peugeot promotes a better boot space than some of its rivals. The Renault Captur, for instance, has a boot capacity of 265 to 422 litres of volume available, 1,118 to 1,275 litres with the back seats down. 

The Peugeot 2008 is not a 4x4. At present, the car is exclusively front-wheel drive. High spec models come with the brand’s Grip Control system which assists with traction on slippery or loose surfaces.

How much road tax you pay for a Peugeot 2008 depends considerably on the model. Some vehicles didn’t attract any tax at all in the past. However, because CO2 emissions are higher than the threshold level for most vehicles, the average driver can expect to pay around £155 per year (with slightly higher fees applying in the first year).

The Peugeot 2008 does not have a 1990s style sunroof that you open and close with a mechanism. However, it does have a panoramic roof which covers most of the top of the vehicle.

Peugeot equips the 2008 with rear parking sensors as standard. It also offers rear-view cameras for backing into tight spots and seeing what’s behind you, and good visibility out of the rear window. 

Following the introduction of the second generation of the vehicle in 2019, Peugeot made some significant improvements to the 2020 2008. The vehicle now ticks more boxes than ever before.

First, it’s fun to drive. The high riding position and excellent onboard technology gives you a sense of confidence.

The electric range on the EV version is pretty good – close to market-leading – offering drivers an alternative to standard vehicles in the class.

The cabin design is also excellent. While it might not have as much space as some of its rivals for luggage, it makes up for this in height and spaciousness for passengers.

The exterior is vastly improved too. The 2008 is a vehicle that has real presence on the road.

Peugeot’s Grip Control system improves performance in various adverse weather conditions, including the snow. However, 4x4’s with traction control are more known for offering better grip.

The 2008 finished in tenth place of the thirty-four vehicles surveyed for 'WhatCar?' in the small SUV class. As such, it is one of the more reliable subcompacts on the market.

What’s more, Peugeot has updated the vehicle since the last round of testing which may mean that reliability is even better than before. Other vendors, such as 'Car Buyer', have found that the 2008 is highly rated among drivers – in the top 20 percent of vehicles purchased in the last year.

The second generation Peugeot 2008 has Bluetooth connectivity. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay also come as standard.

GT Line 2008s have heated front seats. 

The rear seats in the Peugeot 2008 fold flat. This allows you to increase boot space from around 434 litre to an impressive 1,400 litres.

When you fold the 60:40 split rear seats down, it creates a flat luggage floor, reducing the chances of luggage snagging as you try to take it out. There’s also a helpful flap that makes it easier to remove items from the boot without them getting caught.

The Peugeot 2008 is a funky new car from the French automaker that offers a little bit of everything. It’s fun to drive, has plenty of utility and looks like it comes from the future. What’s more, there’s an exciting EV version – great for people who want zero annual road tax and low CO2 emissions.
