Peugeot 408 Ultimate Buyers Guide | Engines, Dimensions, Reliability, Insurance Groups & More

Date Posted: 01 October 2024

What are you really getting with the brand-new Peugeot 408, a stylish and modern addition to the brand's lineup, that combines a practical family car with the sleek looks of a coupe SUV, like everybody thinks, or something else entirely?

Well, in our Peugeot 408 review and car buying guide, we will find out if this car lives up to the hype and if it is truly worthy of the Car of the Year Award that it got given at the CarWow Awards.

So let us find out if this car is right for you.

Standout Features

✔ The Peugeot 408 is a large family car that gives you a very modern and stylish appearance that really stands out on the road, giving it a premium feel.

✔ It offers you a large and spacious cabin with comfortable seats with plenty of legroom of around 41 inches in the front and 35 inches for your passengers - all of which makes long journeys a lot more enjoyable.

✔ This Coupe-SUV comes with the latest tech features, including an easy-to-use touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, to name only a few.

✔ With fuel types from hybrid and petrol engine options (with pure-electric engines on the way) available, the 408 offers you excellent fuel economy, helping to reduce your running costs by having a good selection of electric car engine options to choose from.

✔ The 408 also has a large boot of 536 litres with the back seats up and up to 1,583 litres with the rear passengers seats down - making it perfect for carrying large amounts of luggage, shopping, or gear for family trips as well.

What is a Peugeot 408?

A Peugeot 408 is a coupe-SUV - or fastback SUV - that combines design elements of a traditional SUV with the sleek, sloping roofline of a Coupe, which in turn offers you a very stylish and sporty design.

However, you are also keeping the practicality and space of an SUV, but with its increased ride height and very spacious interior, all of which make it very suitable for families at the same time.

External Design

One of the first things we thought when we saw the 408, is how much of a striking vehicle it is, which is in part thanks to it showing the brand's latest design philosophy, but, its more than that as it also combines a lot of stylish elements with some practical features, which to be honest really does create a very memorable presence once you drive it, we found.

Front Design

At the front, the Peugeot 408 gives you a bold and very assertive front that really does immediately catch your eye - at least it did ours

Grille

With the centrepiece being Peugeot's signature frameless grille, it really integrates really well with the sculpted front bumper.

The grille's intricate pattern is then complemented really well by its chrome accents and the iconic Peugeot lion emblem at its heart as well.

LED Headlights

Flanking the grille are some very stylish LED lights that give you the brand's distinctive "Claw" Daytime Running Lights design of 3 lines on the outside - which in turn provides you with both excellent visibility and a unique visual signature at the same time.

Bonnet

The sharp lines on the bonnet also add to its aggressive stance, thanks in part to it channelling airflow efficiently while enhancing the car's sporty appeal simultaneously.

Side Profile

Moving to the side profile, the Peugeot 408 then gives you a very noticeable mix of practical SUV sizing, all combined with a coupe look.

For instance, its gently sloping roofline tapers towards the rear, giving the car a fastback silhouette, all without compromising interior headroom as you get up to 58 inches inside as well.

Character Lines

Prominent character lines then run along the doors, which really do add a lot of depth to the bodywork we feel.

Especially when you combine its high waistline and subtle curves, as these noticeable features really contribute to that sense of motion even when the car is stationary design language that automakers strive for in their designs.

Rear Design

Moving to the rear, the Peugeot 408 continued to impress us with a design that is both very functional while bieng very aesthetically pleasing at the same time.

LED Taillights

The LED taillights are also connected by a glossy black horizontal strip, which has become a true signature element in Peugeot's design language over recent years.

These taillights feature the brand's claw-like light pattern, ensuring the 408 is easily recognisable from behind - especially at night.

Wheel Sizes and Designs

Depending on the trim level and configuration you go for, the Peugeot 408 comes equipped with some very stylish alloy wheels in various sizes for you to pick from.

For instance, you have:

Wheel Description Allure Allure Premium GT Option Code
17" ‘Silex’ Alloy Wheels
Anthra Grey Gloss
Star Centre Cap - Anthra Grey Gloss
ZXH2
19" ‘Jaspe’ Diamond Cut Alloy Wheels

Rear Window

The rear window is also steeply angled, which really complements the fastback's style roofline while contributing to the car's aerodynamic efficiency.

Lip Spoiler

A subtle lip spoiler on the boot lid then adds a sporty touch to its design while aiding in your downforce at higher speeds, which really helps your overall performance.

Rear Bumper

The rear bumper is then cleanly designed and houses an integrated reflector, and, on higher trims such as the 408 GT, you get very stylised exhaust outlets that also enhance the vehicle's sporty character.

Exterior Colours

For its exterior colours, you have 1 of 8 to choose from, which consist of:

KEY: STANDARD OPTIONAL UNAVAILABLE

Metallic Paints

Paint Option Code Allure Allure Premium GT
  M0DP
Cumulus Grey M0F4
Nera Black M09V
Okenite White M0SU
Selenium Grey M0LD
Titane Grey (Stock only) M01J

Premium Paint

Paint Option Code Allure Allure Premium GT
Elixir Red M5VH
Pearlescent White (Stock only) M0F4

As you can see from its exterior design, the Peugeot 408 really does, at least we thought, successfully merge both form and function by offering you a vehicle that is as enjoyable to look at as it is to drive.

Interior Design

Moving to the interior, when we first got inside it, it is clear that the 408 gives you a real combination of modern design, premium materials, and practical, functional features - both of which have visually been created for both the driver and passengers alike as well.

For instance, upon entering the cabin, the first thing you and we noticed was the Peugeot i-Cockpit layout. This layout, for instance, features a very compact steering wheel and a good high digital instrument panel and instrument cluster, allowing you to easily see all the information you need easily.

This layout arrangement, we feel, provides the driver, especially, with an engaging, ergonomic driving experience while keeping essential information within your line of sight at the same time - it's very good.

Soft-touch Materials

Soft-touch materials and a refined finish give the cabin a premium feel, while the chrome accents and ambient lighting add a very high-end touch of sophistication as well.

Technology

In terms of technology, the 408 is equipped with a high-resolution and responsive 10-inch touchscreen, integrated with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto - allowing you to connect your smartphone seamlessly for immediate connectivity to your apps and music really easily.

The infotainment system is also very intuitive, responsive, and placed within easy reach of the driver and front passenger as well, all while the climate controls are conveniently located below the screen, giving you a very clean, noticeable and minimalist dashboard design on the whole, we thought.

Storage

When it comes to storage, the boot space is generous for its class, as it offers you 536 litres in the Puretech models and 471 litres in the Hybrid models, up to 1611 litres and 1,545 litres, respectfully depending on the seat configuration you choose, you need.

The rear seats also fold flat, providing you with a large and practical loading area - which is perfect for your weekend getaways or family road trips alike.

Additionally, thoughtful storage solutions like large door bins, a roomy glovebox, and centre console compartments all contribute to the vehicle’s overall practicality as well, we must note.

Sound Insultation

The sound insulation in the cabin is also very impressive, effectively minimising road and wind noise really well - which we found really did enhance our overall comfort, especially for motorway driving.

Audio

If you decide you want a more premium audio experience, you can then Opt for the FOCAL® Hi-Fi system, which further improves your overall audio experience as well, as it really does give you clear and immersive sound throughout the cabin as a result.

Climate Control

Peugeot has also equipped the 408 with dual-zone climate control, allowing both you - the driver - and your passengers to set individual temperature preferences to your liking as well.

Keyless Entry

Keyless entry and push-button start also furhter add to the ease of use that the 408 gives you, especially as your daily driver as well.

Engine Options and Performance

For engine options, you have several to choose from, including both petrol and hybrid engines.

These include a 1.2-litre petrol engine, and unlike a mild hybrid engine, it comes with a full plug-in hybrid version known as Hybrid 180 and Hybrid 225.

The petrol versions then offer you a great balance between power and fuel efficiency, while the hybrid engines combine a petrol engine with an electric motor and a fully electric battery pack - providing you with electric power for low speeds and boosting your overall performance while reducing your CO2 emissions while it does so as well.

Driving Experience and Handling

When you get behind the wheel, the first thing you will notice when it comes to its handling is how the Peugeot 408 gives you a composed and agile driving experience that gives you a great overall ride quality as well.

Suspension System

The suspension system, for instance, is finely tuned to absorb the road imperfections, all while providing you with responsive handling and good driving position while it does so.

Steering

Steering is also very light but accurate, thanks in part to the small steering wheel, making the 408 a joy to manoeuvre through city streets or take on longer journeys we found.

Automatic Gearbox

The automatic gearbox also shifts smoothly, and you can select different driving modes to tailor your experience even more - including an electric mode in hybrid models for quiet, zero-emission driving at low speeds, which is ideal for use in congestion zones.

Fuel Consumption

For your fuel economy, this is a strong selling point for the Peugeot 408, especially with its petrol and hybrid models.

For instance, its PureTech petrol engines are also designed to be efficient without sacrificing your performance while they do so.

Its Hybrid models, like the Hybrid 180 and Hybrid 225, also offer you very impressive MPG of up to 270.30 MPG and can run on electric power alone for short distances, reducing fuel consumption significantly as well.

This makes the 408 an economical choice for both city commuting and longer trips, appealing to those concerned about running costs.

Peugeot 408's Safety Equipment

For safety this is a clear priority in the Peugeot 408, with a full suite of active and passive safety features included.

Active Safety Features

Active safety features are packed in the 408 and include advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), such as lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert, to name only a few for instance.

Passive Safety Features

The 408 also comes full of passive safety features as well and is covered with multiple airbags, a reinforced body structure, and crumple zones, all of which have been designed to protect its occupants in the event of a collision.

Rear Parking Sensors

Rear parking sensors and a rear window camera also really help you in manoeuvring the vehicle safely, as we found.

Euro NCAP Safety Rating

All this tech has helped the Peugeot 408 earn high marks in the Euro NCAP safety tests, reflecting its robustness and strength in crash scenarios along with the effectiveness of its safety technology as a whole.

safety Peugeot 408

Active Safety Brake System

This comes as standard on all models and is a smart braking system that can stop the car - or reduce its speed - automatically to avoid a crash or make it less serious at least.

For example, this system steps in if you do not respond in time by automatically using the car’s brakes to help prevent an accident from occurring as a result.

Lane Keeping Assist

Again, standard on all models, the lane keep assist system watches the lane markings on the road for you.

If the car then starts to drift out of its lane, you will see a warning light on the dashboard to alert you, and if the system senses that the car is about to accidentally cross a lane line, it gently steers the car back on course automatically - as long as you are driving over 40mph.

It also helps detect the edge of the road to stop the car from veering off, helping to prevent lane drift from occurring as a result.

Long Range Blind Spot Detection (up to 75 metres)

Standard from the Allure Premium up, this system comes with side sensors and a camera and actively looks to spot vehicles you can’t see in your blind spot.

If it then detects that something is there, a light will appear in the door mirror to warn you.

Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go Function

Standard from the Allure Premium upwards, the ACC Stop and Go system is controlled by buttons on the steering wheel and does two things:

  • Keeps the car at the speed set by the driver
  • Adjusts the car’s speed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, based on the driver’s chosen settings for distance.

Lane Positioning Assist

Standard on the GT trims, this smart system keeps the car in the centre of your lane by adjusting your steering as needed.

At the same time, the adaptive cruise control also keeps the car at the right speed and distance from the traffic ahead of you as well.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert

Standard from the Allure Premium up, when reversing, this feature warns you of any obstacles in your blind spots, such as cars, bikes, or motorbikes, using radars built into the back corners of the car.

Night Vision

Optional on the GT trims, this advanced technology helps the driver spot people and animals on the road at night.

It does so by using an infrared camera at the front of the car; Puegoet Night Vision can then detect pedestrians and animals taller than 50 cm from 15 to 200 metres away, all while warning you up to 100 metres before a possible collision occurs.

The display in front of you also shows what’s ahead in greyscale, with moving hazards like people or animals highlighted in yellow or red based on the risk level the car has detected as well.

Closing Thoughts of the Peugeot 408

As you can see, the Peugeot 408 really does stand out as a stylish choice in the fast-growing fastback segment.

This is in part due to its very stylish fastback design, allowing the 408 to offer you a fresh alternative to traditional SUVs, thanks in part to its combination of the practicality of a raised ride height with the style of a coupe-inspired silhouette.

Inside, the cabin really impressed us with a modern, high-quality finish and an intuitive infotainment system, along with plenty of space for both passengers and cargo as well.

The advanced driver assistance features really enhance both its safety and ease of driving, and you have a range of efficient engine options to choose from, all of which give you one very refined ride.

Sherwoods Motor Group Limited is an Appointed Representative of Automotive Compliance Ltd, who is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA No 497010). Automotive Compliance Ltd’s permissions as a Principal Firm allows Sherwoods Motor Group Limited to act as a credit broker, not as a lender, for the introduction to a limited number of lenders and to act as an agent on behalf of the insurer for insurance distribution activities only.

We can introduce you to a selected panel of lenders, which includes manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent. An introduction to a lender does not amount to independent financial advice and we act as their agent for this introduction. Our approach is to introduce you first to the manufacturer lender linked directly to the particular franchise you are purchasing your vehicle from, who are usually able to offer the best available package for you, taking into account both interest rates and other contributions. If they are unable to make you an offer of finance, we then seek to introduce you to whichever of the other lenders on our panel is able to make the next best offer of finance for you. Our aim is to secure the best deal you are eligible for from our panel of lenders. Lenders may pay a fixed commission to us for introducing you to them, calculated by reference to the vehicle model or amount you borrow. Different lenders may pay different commissions for such introductions, and manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent may also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement, all of which are set by the lender concerned. If you ask us what the amount of commission is, we will tell you in good time before the Finance agreement is executed. All finance applications are subject to status, terms and conditions apply, UK residents only, 18’s or over. Guarantees may be required.
